At Oh Happy Day, we hope that the statement sock trend will never die. Socks are a small, seemingly insignificant accessory but they’re such a fun way to add a playful twist to an outfit! The sock universe is rife with awesome designs (our favorite brands include Hysteria by Happy Socks, Hansel from Basel and Bonne Maison), but If you find these a little pricey it’s so simple get cheap basics from places like Uniqlo and then make them over with materials in your craft closet. Take a look at what we came up with…
Cherry sock
Materials: Red pom poms, sewing thread, needle, green embroidery floss, scissor, green felt
Step 1: Sew two red pom poms together for each sock.
Step 2: Thread the green embroidery floss and thread through the first pom, making a knot at the bottom of the pom. Backstitch through the sock, making a return from the original stitch location. Thread through the other pom and knot at the end. Tada! Cherries!
Step 3: Cut a small leaf from a piece of green felt, and attach the leaf with a single stitch. You’re all done!
Fringe socks
Materials: Stretch fringe, scissor, sewing thread, needle
Step 1: Start by measure the circumference of the top of the sock. Cut the fringe in the same length with some margin.
Step 2: Fold in the end of the fringe, to get a nice edge, and then sew a few stitches to attach. Continue to attach the fringe by sewing some stitches at along each side of the sock, then fold in the fringe to get a nice end.
Pom pom socks
Materials: Pom poms, glitter pom poms, sewing thread, needle, scissor
Step 1: Start by placing the pom poms on the two socks as mirrored images of one another. Make sure to place them close to one another to prevent separation when the socks are stretched.
Step 2: Sew the pom poms to the socks with a stitch of sewing thread each. Loop the thread around a neighboring pom to ensure they stay together when stretched.
Tassles socks
Materials: Embroidery floss, scissor, sewing thread, needle
Step 1: Make tassels by winding the thread in loops. Knot the bunch to hold it together.
Step 2: Insert a pencil and piece of thread and shimmy the knot to the top. Trim the the bunch of thread to 1-¼”. Repeat to make more tassles!
Step 3: Place the tassles on the socks along the ankle. Sew them to the sock with stitch of sewing thread.
